Mom
My mom. She's really one of a kind. One rare find especially in the 70s and 80s.
She was an electrical engineer, the QC manager for a U.S. semiconductor company. So she was basically a career mom. Took of enough time to rush into the hospital, gave birth, and then it's back to work again.
Not that I mind, but I'm 100% sure this is where my career-mindedness came from. But it is kinda weird when people can remember their mom being with them the first day of school, mom cooking lunch and dinner for the family every night, I remembered hanging out with my nanny waiting for mom to come home from work at 8pm and tuck me into bed.
Sometimes I'd already be in bed when she gets home. Sometimes I'd pretend to be fast asleep when she sneak a peek into my room. She'll always come in and give me a peck on the cheek regardless. I wondered back then if she knew I was awake or not.
She was a guest on a radio talk show once, something about how to juggle career and family and kids. Over the radio, I heard her say, "The one little thing that I do every night, no matter how late I got home, or how tired I am, I will always kiss my kids goodnight, it doesn't matter whether they are awake or not. Trust me, they know."
In the later years, my brother, my sister, and I will sometimes fight and throw punches at each other. Everytime when one hits another, the victim will yell, "MOM! She hit me on the arm!!" "Mom! Look at him, he's punching me, ouch!" My mom would look up from her newspaper reading, and said, "Oh c'mon, punch her back. hard."
Mom doesn't cook a whole lot. In fact, she has about 5 signature dishes that she mastered from grandma, and that's about it. The rest, she left it up to the maid. So I was pleasantly surprise and found it very humorous when I received this email from her two days ago. "... Your dad has invited some of his ex-staff over for this Saturday and believe it or not, I’m going roast a turkey! I’ve attended a personal coaching session from our expert uncle Taz, except that there is no demo. I can guarantee the turkey will be cooked but that’s just about it for this time. Anyway, I don’t have to worry about keeping up my reputation, never have one in the first place. Will let you know how it turns out."
Yes, that's our mom and we all love her very much!
